Earth Day

Earth Day is a name used for 2 similar global observances. While some people celebrate Earth Day around the time of the March Equinox, others observe the occasion on April 22 each year. Earth Day aims to inspire awareness of and appreciation for earth’s environment. It’s not to be confused with Earth Hour.

What do people do

The April 22 Earth Day is usually celebrated with outdoor performances, where individuals or groups perform acts of service to earth. Typical ways of observing Earth Day include planting trees, picking up roadside trash, conducting various programs for recycling and conservation, using recyclable containers for snacks and lunches. Some people are encouraged to sign petitions to governments, calling for stronger or immediate action to stop global warming and to reverse environmental destruction.  Television stations frequently air programs dealing with…

One in Every Family

Source of Inspiration

Dark shadows creep
across my soul.
Unable am I to push
them away. Like tattoos
with life, they slither within,
tainting again and again.

Not the stranger on the street,
one more sinister than he.
Smiling face, lies for truth
he robs me of my life
leaving only a shell behind.

Who is this son of evil
who creeps into my room
bringing pain and humiliation?
Not a stranger on the street,
but my father, uncle, brother
while the family passes
knowing looks and secret
unspoken vows to hide from all
this villinous deed
leaving me alone
with my shame.

Fortunately, I never experienced sexual abuse, but have worked with many who have, most often at the hands of those who should have been protecting them. This crime is prevalent and poorly addressed; it shocks me every time. And, why do we call it abuse…rather than what it is…RAPE…

BBC News Africa: Nigeria’s Boko Haram Abducts More Women And Girls.

The Militant Negro™

From The BBC News Africa:

Dozens of women and girls from two villages in Nigeria‘s north-eastern Adamawa state have been abducted by suspected militants, residents say.

The abductions have not been confirmed by the authorities, but residents say they took place a day after the military announced it had agreed a ceasefire with the Boko Haram group.

The government hopes the Islamist group will free more than 200 girls seized in April as part of negotiations.

Boko Haram has not confirmed the truce.

Following Friday’s ceasefire announcement, the government said further talks with Boko Haram were due to be held this week in neighbouring Chad.

Hostage swaps

News of the new abductions came as MPs approved a $1bn (£623m) loan – requested by the president in July – to upgrade military equipment and train more units fighting the north-eastern insurgency.

But they asked the finance minister to give…

Google Doodle …. First day of Autumn 2014!!

It Is What It Is

~~September 23, 2014~~

First day of Autumn: Google Doodle celebrates 2014 Autumn equinox

The animation shows a black and white cartoon figure hop past five grey trees, transforming the leaves into rich autumnal colors.

With the character’s final leap, the leaves fall from the trees – revealing the word ‘Google’ in gnarled branches. A large red leaf then floats down and lands on the smiling character’s head.

This year, the autumn equinox falls in the northern hemisphere on 23 September – the date where day and night are of equal lengths.

The Latin term equinox, or ‘equal night’, is derived from this phenomenon.

The equinox occurs because the Earth’s axis tilts neither away nor towards the Sun.

Meanwhile in the southern hemisphere, the September equinox marks the beginning of spring. Therefore, at the South Pole residents will be celebrating the first appearance of the…
